The a3 size of calico I started off with. |
As the samples I did that was chosen in the design meeting were both on paper. I struggled to recreate the background onto the calico material I was doing my final piece onto. In the picture above you can see I tried to figure out in steps how I created the colours for my background, I finally figured out how I did it, by using yellow orange and red brusho on the plain a3 calico, then use batik to create a swirled pattern background then use diluted blue brusho over the top.
On the picture to the right you can see me testing the brusho colours for my background on scrap bits of calico, I did this to get the colours right before I did it on my actual final piece.
I then dyed my calico, using red, orange and yellow brusho and waited for it to dry. After it had dried on the drying rack I used batik to create a swirled pattern background and waited for that to completely dry.
I then used a blue coloured brusho to cover the whole of my calico with the red, orange and yellow brusho on and the batik I just did, this makes my background have more depth and be more colourful, I then waited for this to dry then I ironed off my batik wax off by placing my calico in between two pieces of news print and ironing over the top of it.
I then went onto doing my repeat screen print with pigment dye's, I used violet blue zbtl to print my repeat pattern onto my dyed background and put it on the drying rack to dry.
The next thing I did was puff binder, I decided to do something different and not puff bind all my print, and use paper to cover up parts of my calico so the puff binder only goes on the uncovered sections of my calico, you can see this on the picture above.
I mixed two pots of puff binder, one orange and one pink I decided to use these colours as they were the ones I used on one of the two samples that was chosen in the design meeting, as I wasn't sure about the how bright I wanted the colour so I used one of my samples to use to test my puff binder on, the first batch I mixed came out two pale so I added more colorant and tested it and it came out right, below is a picture of the sample I tested my puff binder on.

Here is a picture of my final piece after I used puff binder on it...
After I did my puff binder I had to sew into my final piece, I started of by machine sewing into it, but after having problems with the sewing machine I decided to hand sew into it, after many hours of doing so I finally finished my final piece and this Is the end product...
