The Brief
'Holidays are time in which we can break with our usual habits and expectations, this can apply to what we eat, when we sleep but can also relate to our creative practices. we can break free from our rigid self images of how we design, make, draw, what we read.'
Using folk lore as a starting point, create a sense of place through drawing.
Over the next few months you will have opportunities to explore a place, this may be abroad or it may be where you live. Create a series of drawings that explore the history, culture, heritage, customs and rituals of your chosen place. Go to the local museums libraries, try get involved with the summer events, do some draw ins while soaking up coffee culture or enjoying a local beer. If you are going abroad or somewhere far away, you might want to do some initial research first.
Rule one - Make your own sketchbook.
Either make your own sketchbook first to include this work in OR combine the work at the end into a sketchbook that you have made.
Rule two - 50% of the drawings should be drawn using primary/ secondary resources.
You do not need to do observational drawings for all of them but you need to include drawing from both primary and secondary resources, these must make up a minimum of 1/2 of your drawings.
Rule three- Drawings are to be timed.
You need to produce just 10 drawings for this project, each drawing will be times but can be done in any order. On the drawing, the back of it or on a separate sheet, keep a record of the time it took, the times it was done and the date/s.
Drawing - Time Taken
1 - 1 min
2- 2min
3- 4min
4-8 min
5 - 16 min
6 - 32 min
7 - 1 hour
8- 2 hour
9 - 4 hour
10- 8 hour
This is a total of 16 hour and 5 mins drawing.
So... create a series of 10 drawings that are inspired by a place or location of your choice and that is influenced by the broad concept of Folklore.
