Learning Filters In Photoshop

Hey everybody, Welcome back to my blog.
Since I started university I have become quite obsessed with photoshop, Every Monday morning I have a 3 hour CAD lesson learning different skills, Yesterday I learnt how to use filters in photoshop. I have also wrote blog posts on different photoshop skills I have gained, You can find these linked below.

If you have read those few previous photoshop related blog posts you will know that I have learnt scanning in pictures/drawings etc, The mixer brush and using layers as well as all the simple skills.

Learning filters was a piece of cake, real easy.

I scanned in a picture of an observational drawing I did a few weeks back at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, You can do this at home if you have a scanner, Most printers have scanners on them nowadays so have fun playing around with scanning drawings, photographs or found objects in to work with.

Observational drawing scanned in.

I then used the lasso tool to draw around the area I wanted to work with, Created a new A4 blank photoshop document and 'edit- copy - edit - paste' On my new A4 document I started adding layers and colours over the top of the copied scanned in drawing. I explored copying and pasting, Layers, Brushes, Colours, Hue/Saturation/Colourize and moving around my layers.

I would not be able to give you a step by step on what I did as I just explored and experimented with the skills I have learnt - I would advise you to do this as it gives the best outcomes.

I kept the original scanned in document open on another page to be able to go back to it to copy and paste it onto new layers in my new A4 document as I knew I wanted to try fill my page, I would copy and paste it into my A4 creation and then use layers to build colour and texture over the top.

While I was exploring with the skills I had already learnt. Such as brushes and layers I was also using the lasso tool to select parts of my creation, Once the marching ants (the little dotty line that appears when you have made a selection with the lasso tool) appear - I clicked filter (at the top bar) and filter gallery and chose from all the cool filters. This gave my work more texture and a tactile look to it.

Final Outcome

This is my final outcome. If you have followed my blog for a while you will know I enjoy using bright colours far too much than I should! Although the final outcome does not resemble a tree, This is what it is developed into and I love it so much.

If you are just starting out with photoshop and using it for textile design or inspiration for prints for fashion or whatever creativeness you are willing to do with it. I would recommend watching youtube tutorial videos on the basics and defiantly get a few books based on creating digital design.
