I was asked to read three articles about three different textile designers(Nina Jobs, Johan Carpner and Angel Chang) and answer the 6 given questions. Here are my answers…
  1. How did these designers begin their careers?
Johan Carpner begun his career by working for 10 years as a graphic designer and then deciding to take his graphic design as inspiration, He started using graphic symbols and gave them a new life as patterns. He then started using different techniques such as just drawing lines and creating abstract leafs. He did textiles prints for a Swedish luxury retailer ‘Svenskt Tenn.’ When he took paternity leave when his children were born he realised in his year off that he likes to construct things, that is when he became interested in textiles and product design.
Nina Jobs career begun when ‘her textile work spread beyond Swedens boreders when she created the esteemed Jungle motif produced by David Design’ her work was used in IKEA and took her pattern/motifs into peoples homes all around the world.
Angel Chang begun her career even before she left to go study in New York, She had always dreamed to have to her fashion label and it was already happening. Once she had completed her studies she interned at Viktor & Rolf and accepted a job at Donna Karan. She launched her own label in spring 2007 where she collaborated with engineers to create new ways of dressing women with smart fabrics.

2) How is their work sold/brought to the market?
Nina Jobs work is very popular with architects and interior designers just as it is with retail consumers, Her work is sold in IKEA where it all started for her.
Angel Chang’s collections are brought to the market through run way, she creates collections using smart materials, going way over the mark and bending the way fashion is at the moment to create new and technological clothing.

3) What inspires them?
‘I’ve always beeb fascinated by how people try to tame nature despite knowing they’ll never actually succeed’ …. ‘It’s the wildness in nature that gives it it’s beauty’ Johan Carpner gets inspired by trying to create order in the chaos of nature.
Nina Jobs gets inspired by getting ideas from travelling to overseas countries and hanging out in big cities.
Angel Chang’s spring/summer 2008 collection was inspired by the female agents of world war 2 which she found in books, she went back to New York feeling creative and inspired and decided to draw motifs based on hidden maps, fighter planes and encrypted messages.

4)What are the characteristics/ attributes the designers describe them selfs?
Johan Carpner says that his work is tightly focused on form rather than on decoration. Nina jobs says her work is not specifically about fabrics, She also says she likes to work with strong colours. She likes to keep her designs clean and simple. Angel Chang says making her own prints gives her collections deeper layers of meaning which makes the garment as interesting to wear as it was to design.

5)Are there any similarities between the designers?
I think all three of these designers are innovative in their own path, for example Angel Chang’s interest is future/smart materials, She says technology has come so far so why hasn't clothing? She is creating a new innovative way of design, This links to Johan Carpner saying ‘its not about having good taste or a single style anymore, but combining many different styles in a way that hasn't happened earlier’ This shows both designers are making progress in each of their interests/fields of work.

6) How do the designers differ?

Nina jobs and Johan Carpner differ from Angel Chang as they did not know that they wanted to work in textiles, They started of doing very different things, However Angel Chang knew that was what she wanted to do from the start.
