Passage 1

What information can you extract about the artists in the text?

In the passage Philip Leider portrays his friend Richard Serra to have an enormous appetite for art and its problems. He say's that Serra 'pops' Dexedrine and this makes idea's explode in his head, This indicates that Serra has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or a sleeping disorder or is a drug abuser that takes these pills just to spark some creativity. We also know that Richard Serra has a 'fine sense of art world theatrics and he timed his work precisely with Abbie Hoffman an American political and social activist who co-founded the Youth International Party. This leads me to believe his art work could be political and that he could have been a 'Yippy' (Youth International Party member.) Or could have been protesting against Abbie Hoffmans view's.

How is the work of art described? Imagine from the context in the passage, Describe what you saw, Felt. What do you think the piece is about?

The work of art is described as 'huge but its scale was not' 'it took place in nature in the most modest and unassuming manner.' It's hard to imagine what this art could be, I see it in my mind as a hole, not in a gallery but a form of land. Like a valley. Which is not seen from the visual eye until close up and then slipped down. 'From it, one oriented oneself to the rest in a special way, not in the way one might from the top of a mesa or the bottom of a ravine' This indicates Heizer's work is somewhere desolate, lonely, quiet where someone could 'rest' 'die' like they could by jumping off a mesa.

Passage 2

Describe the visual imagery in the passage?

From the passage I know that Mr. Palomar is looking out at the sea, from the shore, observing the waves.

What doe's Mr Palomar  set out to look at?

He sets out to look at the waves, He then sets to single out one wave and concentrate that, He finds the motions of that wave deep and looses his self in thought then that wave folds and crashes then another replaces it, He wants to stop looking however the cycle of the waves is like an addiction.

What different ways does Mr.Palomar think about the wave and what difficulties does he encounter?

Mr. Palomar thinks about the cycle of the wave, 'Mr Palomar sees a wave rise in the distance, grow, approach, change form and colour, fold over it's self, break, vanish and flow again' He find's it difficult to just observe one wave as it vanishes so fast. He also find's it difficult to walk away. He also thinks about the breadth of the wave. "parallel to the shore, it is hard to decide where the advancing front extends regularly and where it is separated and segmented into independent waves, distinguished by their speed, shape, force, direction.'

What do you think the role of the author is in this passage?

The role of the author could be to give the reader an insight of his own past or thoughts throughout this metaphor of waves. It could also be just to explain and communicate Mr Palomar's emotions to the reader.

How might we think about the wave in relation to the process of thinking?
The waves could represent the cycle of thinking, breaking a thought down into segments and having different stages of the thought, Like the different stages of the wave until the thought has gone, like a wave folds over it's self and crashes down.
It could also represent over thinking, Many waves over lapping each other could represent thoughts.

Identify different types or categories of thought (memories about the past, Desires about the future, abstract thoughts, real/fictional thoughts?) How you imagine them?

According to the author, what don't other university departments understand about art and design practice?

The other departments do not understand how the mind is an active part of artwork. They don't understand how every different element of art links and connects together.

In what ways might you use other disciplines/subjects in your practice?

I often like to incorporate other subjects into my textiles practice, This means I can use different techniques to experiment. For example I could use science and burn, grow, sculpt etc... I think choosing a subject to based a project around is a really good way of practice and experiment, It also gives really good research and experimentation.

Do you think other subjects use art and design in their practice? If yes, how, if no, why?

Yes, Art and Design is part of most subjects and most peoples everyday lives. From photography, Architecture, Science (Drawing diagrams and experimenting), However people do not realise this as the art and design in their life is very little. Personally I do not think people take art and design students very seriously, As they do not realise how much hard work go's into their everyday life. Art and Design is a lifestyle not a job.

In what ways do we think in art and design? How might the 'medium' affect the way a practitioner thinks?

When doing an art and design course your mind can officially never switch off, You always think about new idea's, experimenting, thinking of new materials to use etc...  Every technique and medium has a different way of thinking. For example for weavers, Texture and aesthetics are key, Choosing the yarns to look like your inspiration is tricky, You have to think about the structure of the weave to get your idea across visually.
