Comparing Designer Maker Artists\Designers

Handy tips

Designer-Maker 1
Designer-Maker 2
The name of the Designer-Maker and the work to be analysed.

A brief description of the object (colours, shape, scale, context etc.).

A brief description of the technique used (methods, processes, how was it made. etc.).

An interpretation of the meaning or intention of the work (what does it mean? Who/what is it for?)

An evaluation of the work (strengths and weaknesses).

Timorous Beasties – Opera Botanica

WIDTH (MM) : 1380
REPEAT (MM) : 2317
Wallpaper, Detailed with flowers, Colourful yet toned down colours so make it less bright and ‘in your face’

Hand screen printed on non woven paper.

Unable to find out the meaning. My own interpretation is that it is inspired by a garden, Maybe by the secret garden book. Its old fashioned William Morris style gives it a timeless feel and look.

Strengths: The detail in the flowers and the quality of the repeat. Weakness: I personally do not like the colour of the background.
India Flint – what happens when plants and water are heated in conjunction with cloth.

Cloth – Not stated but looks like cotton or calico. Infused with flowers. Mostly green, yellow, burnt orange and purple in colour.

Natural fabrics that have been heated and infused with flowers.

Experimentation/ to inspire pattern.

Strengths: Natural dye and using flowers create texture and unexpected forms. Plenty of unexpected colour. Weakness: After using natural dyes the colours can become dull.
Similarities and differences between the two works: They are both inspired/based on florals. They both use layering up to create detailed and busy work. One is more contemporary as it is a wallpaper which is marketed to sell, The other is to experiment and inspire pattern which is more designer maker.

Links to your own practice: The links from these artists/designers to my own practice is that I use florals and nature to inspire my work. This can be seen in my commercial designer project.
