Timorous Beasties is one of the very few companies who still use silk screen printing. I found this very interesting as it is the printing method that I have been taught throughout college and I feel I am skilled at. Using silk screens limits you to colours as each colour means a different silk screen, However the layered up look which makes it look more colourful and busy is what I like to do with my work and I seem to have been influenced by Timorous Beasties.

The pictures I have included in this blog post are just a few of my favourite designs from Timorous Beasties. The use of bright colours and textured like patterns and techniques such as watercolour and bleach. The bottom photo also shows the use of positive and negative space. Timorous Beasties is a inspiring company which influences a lot of creatives.

The Science Of Textiles - My Paper Tracing; PART 2!

After finishing the first part of my paper tracing I then needed to cut down a continuous line so it would repear - If you've read any previous posts about me doing paper tracings you will hopefully have an idea of how a repeat pattern is done. Firstly I cut down the middle of my paper tracing and it looked like this...
Cutting my paper tracing

Paper tracing after its been cut.
I then had to tape the two parts of my tracing back together but back to back (so the straight edges were touching) and then fill in the gaps with the rest of my pattern.

Paper tracing now a repeat pattern.

Patterns I filled in the gaps with.
After I had completed my paper tracing so it was repeated I then had to figure out how many colours I was going to use and what colour would be where so that I could start to create my design on tracing paper so it could be exposed onto screen/s. As my tracing is quite large this would mean the screens I will be using will be large too and I did not want to have to use loads of colour's as this would mean using more screens. To figure out what colour's to use (I wanted to stick to four) I got some colours out, that matched my development screens and coloured in a section of my paper tracing - this would give me an idea of what colour I wanted everything and would make it easier for me.
Added colour to help me do my tracing
Once I had added colour and decided what colour's would be where so I could get on with my actual tracing. I did plan on using 4 colours but using the pink and the blue means I could add purple to my collection by not adding other screen so that's what I decided to do.

In my next post I shall be talking through the process of how I did my tracing.

Huddersfield Uni - Final Major Project Inspiration

During my time at Huddersfield University which I went to attend one of my interview's, I had a look around at the work people were currently working on. As I am currently in the process of making mind maps of themes and my proposal for my final major project it gave me a lot of inspiration and idea's. Here are a few pictures.

The section of work in these photo's inspire me to use colour and more specialised materials in my work. The shapes and colour are really inspiring.

This section of work looked really interesting, the patterns really inspired me. Although this section of work did not inspire me for my final major project, It was interesting to look at.

This section of work was what inspired me most. Still not knowing what I wanted to do as my topic for my final major project I was waiting to go in the studio for my interview and I spotted this section of work, at first I thought it was eye catching because of the colours and I was trying to think of a topic/theme where I could do something similar to this, The I spotted the chart at the side of this work, and it was cells. This inspired me a lot and will be playing a big part in my final major project. The section of work next to this also inspired me, you can only see a bit of it on this photo and I sadly could not get a photo of this section of work as I was called in to my interview but it's science based, featuring holographic's.

I really enjoyed my time at Huddersfield University on this day, it was lovely to have more of an independent look around whilst I was waiting for my interview and I am thrilled to have got a conditional offer for both textiles and textiles with surface design.
